James Kevin Kimball was born and raised in Maringouin, Louisiana.
He attended Iberville Parish public school through 9th grade and then attended high school at Catholic High School of Pointe Coupee. After graduating Catholic High in 1982 he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana graduating in 1986 with a major in Pre-Law and minor in Psychology. He then attended Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans and received his Juris Doctorate in 1989. While attending Law School he worked for the Louisiana Sentencing Commission collecting data on cases in Orleans Parish for a statewide sentencing study.
After graduating from Law School, he had the honor and pleasure to practice law with and learn from his father, the late, William L. Kimball, Sr. for twelve years. During his practice he handled an array of cases including, successions and probate cases, family law cases, criminal cases, property-land-mineral cases, personal injury cases, bank closings and transactional work. In 1991 he was hired as an Assistant Indigent Defender for the 18th Judicial District. He initially handled misdemeanors and DWI’s for the entire district and after a short while began handling felony cases in Iberville Parish and then later in Pointe Coupee Parish.
During that time, he tried numerous jury trials and was capital case certified. In 2007 he volunteered to assume the role as the juvenile public defender for the entire three parish area, a job that he put his heart and soul into for the last 10 years. He has also served on the LA Juvenile Defender Advisory Council, a statewide organization devoted to the improvement of the representation of juveniles.
Kevin is married to Sherry Harvey Kimball and has three children, daughter Kaelyn; who just completed her first year at LSU; son, Jacob, age 18, who will be attending ULL this Fall, and son Connor, age 12, who will be in the 7th grade at Holy Family School.
Kevin has been involved in the community for many years. He has been a member of Holy Family Parish for over 20 years where he served as a member of the Church Advisory Council serving as Chairperson for 4 years. He also served on the Building Committee.
He served as coach for Holy Family School Athletics and West Baton Rouge Recreation for over 10 years.
He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1991 and served as Advocate for over 10 years.
He was a Member of Maringouin Lions Club from 1998 until it’s dissolution in 2014.
He previously served on the West Baton Rouge Parish Notary Commission.
Kevin has long aspired to follow in the footsteps of his great uncle, District Judge Dan Kimball and his cousin, retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball and carry on the family tradition of great juris. On November 24th, 2017 Kevin was sworn in as Judge of the 18th Judicial District Court, Division “A”, Pointe Coupee Parish.
